CANON POINT: After returning from the Arbor Wilds, before confronting Corypheus directly
CHARACTER AGE: Early thirties
HISTORY: All of Miahi's important in game decisions are bullet pointed here to save some word count.

Miahi Adaar was born outside of qunari society in the Free Marches and is thus considered Tal-Vashoth, though most Thedosians don't know enough of their culture to refer to her as such. Growing up outside of the Qun meant her exposure was limited to what her parents had taught her, which was unfortunately limited to what Miahi had thought to ask about. Her father (though she would never use such a word) was once Antaam (apart of the Qunari military) before his severance from the Qun, though her mother was Taardathras (charged with animal husbandry) and both had fled at separate instances before meeting in the Free Marches. Miahi's conception occurred some time later and was an act of defiance more than an act of love, which left her relationship with them somewhat estranged. Lacking the proper understanding of how to raise a child, Miahi has many gaps when it comes to social graces and understanding of her people as well as the culture of others. As a result, she is a practical listener and has learned to feign understanding when she often has little idea of what she's doing or what people are talking about.

Growing up Tal-Vashoth meant a hard childhood. Though the Free Marches were far from any true qunari reach, it was rare that her family unit had stayed anywhere long. They stood out too easily in spite of the fact that her parents had removed their horns upon severing themselves from the Qun, and many Tal-Vashoth were considered upstarts and bandits. Miahi was taught by her father early how to defend herself, though she was clumsy with a heavy weapon. It wasn't until she stole a bow during their journey between settlements that they figured out a solution. She'd always been a bit of a rock climber anyway -- some might have called it fate.

The years went on, moving from town to town without much to interrupt them outside of the occasional attempts on their lives by Ben-Hassrath and mercenary bands hired by nervous lawmakers or business owners. As she aged, her parents tightened their grip on her whims and wanderings, feeling a duty to groom her as much as possible so she would not feel the burdens they often felt when it came to living among other cultures -- and dealing with their own people continuously knocking on their doorstep. With the knowledge firm in her mind of how to survive and care for herself, Miahi abruptly parted ways from her sires. She felt absolving them from perceived responsibility would make their lives more whole, and she could scarcely stand further attempts to guide her down the torn path she'd never really understood. No ill will was held between them, though she has failed to keep contact in recent years and knows little of their whereabouts -- or even if they're still alive.

Shortly after leaving her parents behind, Miahi used her archery skills to join the Valo-Kas, a band of mercenaries made up of Tal-Vashoth in the Free Marches. They quickly achieved infamy through their success rate, and Miahi's skills with a bow were recognized as extraordinary -- or perhaps it was the ominous sight of horns up high shortly before the arrow struck that granted her favor. Nonetheless, she and a few other Valo-Kas were hired at the Conclave as a neutral party between the templars and mages during peace talks. That is, of course, when disaster struck.

As far as most Thedosians know, an explosion ripped a large green rift into the Fade further known as "the Breach", and that explosion killed everyone (including Divine Justina, prophet of the holy Chantry) -- except Adaar. For a time, she didn't remember any of the details, but later events taught Miahi that she had stumbled on a captive Justina being used as a sacrifice to power what is now known as The Anchor: an elven orb of rich power that allowed its wielder to violently rip open gateways to the Fade...or close them.

A thief in the wrong place at the wrong time -- that was what the Elder One who's plans she had interrupted had called her. The Breach in the sky brought many people who were once at odds together in unity. He wasn't totally wrong, as it turns out. A Tal-Vashoth who spend much of her life killing others and stealing to keep herself alive hardly had any business wielding her new title -- the Herald of Andraste. She hated it, but after being advised not to refute it by her new advisors in the Inquisition, she held onto it without actively acknowledging divine involvement any time she was pressed.

The Inquisition is not founded on stable ground. Shortly after falling out of the Fade, she was taken in by the chantry and interrogated about the mark on her hand, where the Anchor's magic had taken hold. It spread with the Breach and was visibly killing her the longer the talks went on while a confused and angry Adaar violently refused to submit to their treatment of her. However, when it was revealed that the magic on her hand could actually close the rifts, their attitude toward her changed. Suddenly, instead of the herald of their demise, she was their savior -- an agent of the Maker, sent to deliver them from dark times. The Inquisition was founded on the principle of peace between mages and templars, and Miahi was to be the symbol of hope that inspired all of Thedas during dark times. A tall order for a qunari, let alone a qunari who had been shunned by many of them for most of her life.

Times in the early Inquisition were not easy. Those who did not trust that Miahi was indeed the Herald of Andraste doubted that a qunari could do anything to protect them from what was coming. Miahi is embittered by the reality of what she has to deal with on the day to day, though she is grown enough to understand that projecting that bitterness on others will not solve the problem of the Breach in the sky -- and the Breach would kill her, would kill innocents, would reshape the world. So she has little choice but to fall in line and be the puppet and symbol everyone wants her to be.

While the Inquisition gathers power in Haven, it is understood that they must recruit one of the warring factions to give them an edge against the evil that threatens them. It starts with a journey to Val Royeux, where Miahi and the Inquisition is met with opposition from the chantry, damning them and calling them heretics. They call upon the templars to remove them from the city. After witnessing Lord Seeker Lucius' treatment of the revered mothers begging them to rescue them (where he quite literally punches an old woman in the face), Miahi decides to turn to the mages for aid rather than the templars -- a controversial decision that many attempted to argue against. Some even attempt to convince her to convert them as prisoners, rather than allies, an idea that Miahi refutes.

Shortly after, they are visited by the Elder One, a Tevinter magister turned darkspawn who names himself Corypheus. He gives a large speech and confirms all of the information above, save for the events that lead them to this point. His monologue allows many to escape the chaos in Haven, but Miahi is forced to make a decision as she's urged to face Corypheus while the war machines are prepared -- find him and keep his attention on her, hoping she can buy more time for others to escape...or risk the demise of everything for the chance to save a few. Ultimately, she rescues those nearest her current position before charging to Corypheus at full speed, only to be met with demons in his stead.

Her survival during the ensuing avalanche is an accident and a miracle on its own, but it erases the doubt for many. This qunari, this outsider and mystery to society, is going to banish this darkspawn and save them all.

Miahi's title as the Inquisitor was not made official until their movement to Skyhold, and was a responsibility she had desperately attempted to pass to Cassandra and others. It was an inevitability due to the symbol she had become, of course, though that didn't make her any more endeared to the idea. Much of her reign as its leader is met with skepticism and occasional amnesia in regards to what occurred at the Temple of Sacred Ashes and Haven. Miahi often allows her advisors to guide her hand, favoring Leliana's advice over most due to her tendency to operate in the shadows.

PERSONALITY: Miahi's beginnings have shaped much of the woman she is today. The first real friends she had ever known were her parents, and they treated her as an adult the moment she came into the world. Rarely was she permitted to simply be a child thanks to the teachings of the Qun -- even with her parents desire to break away from it, their teachings were all they had known growing up, and it was all they had to offer to their daughter. It left her growing up confused and without true direction or goals in life. It carries over into how she leads the Inquisition too often. Her second found friends were all mercenaries in the Valo-Kas, many who had outright rejected the Qun rather than being born outside of it. Sometimes one must grasp at straws until they find one that seems to be the correct length for the cup they are drinking from.

In spite of being a bit of a misanthrope in Thedosian society, Miahi makes an active effort not to let the bitterness in her heart rule her. Even if she does not know the best way to help someone in need, she will almost always try and extend her hand, to give help that she had so often never received for being Qunari or Tal-Vashoth. She's quiet about it, preferring to keep people on the far edges of closeness so that she won't feel attachment when she inevitably must move on. That said, the bitterness is there just underneath the surface and its very easy to coax if one knows what buttons to push.

She has a sort of roguish charm about her. While always keeping people at arm's length, she knows a thing or two about the art of charm and sarcasm and makes use of it often to try and make connections with people. As a result, she makes an equal amount of enemies who are never certain if she's kidding or if she's serious. She rarely apologizes for hurt feelings outside of a diplomacy setting thanks to the responsibility the Inquisitor mantle has given her. Her relationships are all treated casually, but on a rare occasion she will offer sincere opinions -- particularly if she finds someone struggling for one reason or another.

Stubbornness is very present in Miahi to the point of aggression. She does not fear and often will go head to head with people in arguments if she feels justified in what she has to say. It helps that there is almost always a dagger in her sleeve waiting to be pressed into someone's wrist, but she is not actively a murderer in matters of opinion. That said, the idea is not beneath her. For example, if she were to be confronted with someone who truly felt she was incompetent for being Tal-Vashoth, she might very well pull that dagger if the other party were aggressive enough with their opinions. Her bite is much worse than her bark, and though her tongue is occasionally tipped silver, she very much prefers to settle her disputes with actions over words.

For all her anger toward the world and bottled bitterness that she keeps close to the chest, being born in the Free Marches with the need to be constantly moving has instilled in her an appreciation and wanderlust that she would not have had were she born under the Qun. It is not unusual to find her high on Skyhold's walls, in places she perhaps should not be, or messing with some sort of object that doesn't belong to her. It would be wrong to call her mischievous, as her intents are rarely malicious, but curious. She's very defensive of her right to do as she pleases in this regard not because she's the Inquisitor, but because she was born free. She's matured some since obtaining the mantle of Inquisitor, but she's also a full grown woman fairly set in her ways and it still surfaces often.

For all her bullheadedness, Miahi is quick to go woolgathering and let her mind wander when she's able. It started as a coping mechanism that turned habit, and she can often be found considering the deepest of her thoughts when left alone to her own devices. She often prefers the company of her thoughts over the company of others due to her difficulties communicating with people properly. The trait has lessened since becoming Inquisitor, but it is a defense mechanism she uses when stressed in social situations, to keep her from snapping at others.

When Miahi does form relationships, they are often held privately (even friendships).

ABILITIES: The most notable ability Miahi possesses is the Anchor in her palm, which has the ability to tear (or close) rifts into the Veil that separates the natural world from that of the Fade. However, I do not think it will come up much in game since the Fade is lacking.

Miahi is a skilled archer, trained in the art of subtlety as an Assassin. The training has enhanced since moving to the inquisition. In spite of being almost 7 feet tall, she's been trained to use her shadow to fool others into thinking she's in places where she isn't, and knows how to be silent and quick even in the most stressful of situations. It makes her incredibly deadly.

SINS & VIRTUES:

[PS: Not necessarily gunning for Evelyn, but won't say no.]

Wrath - Savage and toxic are how the Qunari describe Tal-Vashoth. The more literal sense of the word doesn't always apply to Miahi, but her temper is a wicked creature when coaxed. She's known to turn a blind eye toward the death of others if it means they're getting their just desserts, and her trust is difficult to win back once lost.

Pride - Miahi is incredibly proud (like most Qunari), though its an easy trait to miss in her if one isn't familiar with Qunari culture. Though she was born Tal-Vashoth and did not make the choice actively, she takes her freedom very seriously and is proud to be free of the tyranny of her people's culture. She's also quite aggressive in the face of those who would mock such pride.

Envy - Being free was something Miahi treasured and something that was stolen from her when she gained the Anchor. She envies those who don't have the bear the mantle on their shoulders, and she envies her parents and their ability to set aside their responsibilities on a whim to move on. The subject is a sore one, but it comes up often enough that envy is an equal part of the ugliness that comes with facets of her personality.

Lust - Miahi hungers for companionship in all of its forms, even if she's often shy about it. There's no hesitation when it comes to flirting with everyone she comes in contact with, and she treats sex very casually thanks to the culture she was raised in. Deeper bonds aren't needed to satisfy her, but that doesn't mean she doesn't privately pine for them.
